Night 4

The boys seemed eager and ready to get into bed tonight earlier than usual, so I figured they would go to sleep quickly. They talked and talked for more than an hour! My tape ran out, and Ian was crying, so I ended up going in there again. He said his tummy hurt, and I held him for awhile. Alex decided he was ready to lay down and go to sleep, and after some coaxing, Ian agreed to go back into bed also and go to sleep. Here's what happened before that:

I - I'm sick
A - You  have 2 loveys
I - No I'm sick
A - And I'm sick (he drinks and slurps)

I come in and give it to him.
I - I need that other one
A - I don't want that lovey so much
I - I like it too. He is so soft. So soft. He have a different nose. Different nose.
Talk about loveys, and how soft they are and their different noses. Some background -- when they were about 2, Ellie reached into a drawer and pulled out 2 little blue bear-faced blankets that they had received when they were born. She called them loveys, and they have been attached to them ever since. We are always able to find them, but about a month ago, I was tired of worrying about them and always searching for them, so I decided to order some spares. I bought a 3-pack, feeling relieved that we could finally was the loveys and have some spares so none would be missed, and if we lost one, we'd have others. But when I showed them the new loveys, they both cried and Alex said it was scary. I figured they were too new looking, so I started walking around the house with them under my feet, and then washing them over and over. They could still tell the difference. Finally I held the 2 up next to each other and sure enough, the faces are different, around the nose. Not much, but enough for them to notice. So that's what they are talking about. Alex still has not warmed up to the new ones, but Ian seems open to the new and the old. Here they are:
The 2 loveys; the new one is on the left

A - Somebody cracked this open
I - Who cracked this open
A - Max cracked this open

A - Max

I - I don't have my Minnie

They are talking too quietly for me to understand. I think they are falling asleep, but I know better! Now they are talking about the Sandra Boynton book "Doggies" and keep saying "3 doggies go yap yap yap" back and forth to each other. That is an accurate part of that book!
I- Call mommy, Alex. It's wake up time.
A - No
I - Are you tired Alex?
A - Yah. Tired lovey
I - Are you tired lovey
A - 3 dogs to yap yap yap

I - OK.....Wake up time. Wake up Alex
A - Ian? Ian? You seepin?
I - Don't wake me up
A - OK
They are quiet now, and we're about a half hour in. I think I am going to give up on tonight's post because it is becoming too long and difficult to keep up with them using my old camcorder and constantly rewinding.  I just ordered a digital voice recorder, which should make taping, hearing and transcribing easier for me! Now I just can't wait to get it. It will also allow  me to put the sound on the computer, so if there is a portion that is particularly amusing, I can put the sound in this blog.

We are going out tonight, so a babysitter will be putting the kids to bed.  I haven't decided yet if I'm going to tell her to start the video recorder or not. I'm kind of curious about what they'll say tonight when we are not here, so I am leaning toward having her do it (if she remembers, of course!). I have high hopes that this project will get much easier in about a week, when my new recorder arrives. In the  meantime, I am enjoying hearing my little boys talk each night.

  1. I was actually thinking of the same thing you wrote - could you record them and post it as an audio clip? Then you wouldn't have to transcribe so much... although it's hilarious to see it in script-form, too! And isn't it nice to know they like you? (Well, Ian likes you - Alex likes his lollipop.) :)

  2. I know, comments like that are what make this so funny!! I will still transcribe, but this way, I can also include some short clips sometimes. And I should also be able to save some portions as memories for them when they get older (and are mad at me for taping them without their knowledge :-))
