Last night of being 2!!!

The boys turn 3 tomorrow! I truly can't believe 3 years have gone by with them!

I haven't posted for awhile, or even taped them for that matter. I got caught up on one a few weeks ago that I never finished, and then I didn't tape again. We have also separated them in beds again, since it turns out they were not sleeping well together, crammed into a crib. So they are back on their own.  Since they turn 3 tomorrow, I thought I'd capture their last conversation as 2-year-olds.

Here goes...

Night 33 - Together in Alex's bed

Alex decided he wanted to sleep in his own bed tonight, much to the disappointment of Ian. So Ian agreed to go into Alex's bed tonight. They are nicely sleeping head-to-toe in Alex's bed, and feel asleep relatively quickly, as opposed to last night.

Night 32

For the last few mornings, Ian has been wanting to get out of his crib first, and then he brings toys to Alex, who stays in his bed. It is very sweet as it is going on; Alex asks for something, then Ian holds something up and says, "this Alex?" and Alex says "yes please" and Ian gives it to him.  It is not so sweet trying to empty Alex's bed when it is actually time for bed later.

At bedtime tonight, Alex's bed was full of toys and books, and the boys decided they wanted to sleep together. I know a few nights ago when they wanted to switch beds, Ian was the one who wanted back in his own bed first. So I suggested that if they sleep together, they do it in Ian's bed. So they did, and guess what? They are sleeping peacefully in his bed right now!

It's pretty sweet, since they have really never slept together since they were born, except for a short while when they slept in the bed with me in infancy (until the doctor nixed that behavior). Since there are no potential hazards to them sharing a bed now, I am glad they are able to get together and feel comfort from each other. I kept waiting to hear yelling and asking me to move Alex back to his bed, but it never happened! I am curious tonight, more than other nights, to hear what they said as they drifted off...

I - Whispers Alex
A - What?
I - I want you
A - I pay choo choos and trucks
I - You seeping over, why you not coming over dere? I don't want to seep over dere

Night 31 - Shortest chat ever!

They start playing with their trains and talking about their tunnels, trains and tracks that are in their beds.
I - Alex I gonna read you a book. I read you a book Alex. A fire truck, a helicopter, a motorcycle, a fire truck, a police car, a boat
A - A airplane, a fire truck, a truck
Quiet talking about trains
I - Alex I will play this game for you. Alex? Alex?

I - I will play this game for you
A - Ok
I - Cuz it have shapes. Cuz dis have a happy face
A - Ian I want to see what you have
I - I put all of the mommy ones in
Quiet for a few minutes but I can hear them playing with their trains. Then, they drift off. This followed a busy day with no naps, and major tantrums right before bed. Both of them were screaming a lot tonight, which must have tired them out. This is my shortest post ever...hopefully they'll sleep well and be more rested tomorrow.

Night 30

Wow! I can't believe I am on my post for 30 nights already! I am taking this opportunity to write a little before I listen to their conversation tonight.

I have learned so much from listening to them during this little project.  I had no idea when I started taping them, what they talked about when left alone. I was curious, and have learned way more than I had expected.

It is interesting to think about how different being a twin is versus being a singleton (is that the term for the rest of us??).  Ellie and Max have been sleeping alone since they left our room at 4 months. They go to bed alone, with their books, stuffed animals and thoughts. Ian and Alex have a completely different experience having someone to talk to as they drift off to sleep.

This has been eye-opening for me to say the least.  The thing that strikes me the most is how close their relationship is. I never knew, from seeing them interact with me and others around, how very close they feel to each other. Hearing them say they need each other makes me happy. It is nice to see that they have a deep bond.

This blog is still a work in progress, and probably always will be. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to continue transcribing entire conversations, or begin to only write the highlights.  I guess time will tell how the blog continues.

I've said it before, but now we are really almost ready to move them to their "big-boy" beds. I am curious to see if they'll end up sleeping together. And now, I am ready to listen to night 30 of crib conversations.

I - Let's play choo choos
A - No
I - Why?
A - Cuz I don't want to
I - So you can play choo choos on your very own crib?
A - Yes
I - Okay
A - I can make it like dis actually
I - And will all fall down. Alex I yelled at you and Alex you want Blue Clues? (Ian is wearing Blues Clues pajamas tonight, and Alex had a tantrum at pajama time. He later claimed he wanted those pajamas, but really, he didn't want any pajamas)
A - Yeah
I - And you want Blue Clues pants?

At the start of this post, I wrote about how nice it was that they can talk about their day before going to bed. Then tonight, as I listened to Ian taunt Alex when he called for me, and Alex tell Ian he would have bad dreams,  I was thinking maybe it's not such a nice thing after all! I guess it is what it is, and that's how a relationship is when you spend all day and all night with a person who shares your exact DNA.

Good night little boys. I hope they both have good dreams!
